Self Portrait Sunday 9/23/2007

Here I am at Fort Caswell, hot sweaty and with hair of incredible bigness and unruly frizziness.

Behind me, you can see one of the buildings on the fort. These are open to exploration, and some of them even have stalactites and stalagmites. I believe the buildings go back to Civil War times, but we did see one with electric light fixtures. That was kinda weird, really, because it was just as old as the other buildings, but had been used in WWII for something.

This wonderful piece of real estate is now owned by the North Carolina Baptist Association, and our youth group had an outing there yesterday.

cool picture :)

There was an old military camp near where I used to live. The barracks had been kept up in a reasonable state and cadets and reserves would train there in the summer. When all the planes were grounded on 9/11 there were some stranded passengers staying there. It must have sucked for them since it was a desolate place with a small boring town about two miles away.

Wow, you do look hot and sweaty. Lot’s of work taking the kids around. The closest thing we have here is the top of Diamond Head. To get to the very top you have to walk through the old WWI Bunker that was a lookout and mapping area. Up until a few years back you could still see some of the codes painted on the wall that they used for mapping. Then they decided they needed to brighten it up and painted everything white :(

Anyway, mines up.

I love old bunkers and forts! Anything historical…
Today I got to go horseback riding! http://www.ficklefood.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=582

First time in fifteen years, I got these pictures loaded and I’m like, jeez! I’ve heard the camera adds ten pounds but I think mine adds twenty! It was great fun anyway, I didn’t get too hot and sweaty, but that poor horse did!

You look natural and relaxed to me, and like you’re having a wonderful time!

We used to visit battlefields and explore forts on vacations when I was a kid. When I first came to Hawaii I got to explore - um, I mean inspect - a lot of the historic buildings around Pearl Harbor. My favorite was an Admiral’s house on Ford Island (in the middle of the harbor.) The basement is huge and contained gun turrets and cells for prisoners. Families and civilian personnel bunkered there during the bombing. The buildings there are not as old as military sttructures on the mainland, but they carry the weight of history nonetheless.

You look like you’ve been baking out there, but that fort sounds pretty cool!
